Derailment causes Penn Station rail cancellations, delays

A morning accident is making of mess of tonight’s commute out of Penn Station.

NJ Transit, the Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak are advising commuters to expect crowded conditions and delays throughout the evening rush hour because of a derailment near Penn Station.

Two cars of an eight-car a Midtown Direct train had a slow-speed derailment after departing Penn Station at 10:50 a.m. today, NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said. No one was injured.

NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains are subject to delays of up to 60 minutes. Some trains will be combined during the evening commute.

Midtown Direct trains will operate to and from Hoboken.

PATH and NJ Transit buses are cross-honoring NJ Transit passes.

The LIRR told commuters to expect delays of 30 minutes and it’s canceling some trains. It suggested that commuters take the subway to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn for eastbound trains.

Trains on the Babylon, Far Rockaway, Hempstead, Long Beach, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma lines were canceled.

Amtrak Northeast Corridor trains into and out of New York City are running 15 to 30 minutes behind schedule.
