Gulp! Asthmatic swimmer’s Manhattan record

A 50-year-old woman with asthma yesterday crushed the record for swimming against the current around Manhattan — and she declared the water is “very, very clean.”

Elizabeth Fry became the first woman to swim clockwise around the island when she left the Willis Avenue Bridge at midnight Thursday, raced down the East River, around the Battery, then up the Hudson.

She made it back to the Bridge after 11 hours, 41 minutes and five seconds.

That beats the old record of more than 17 hours, set in 1995 by a male swimmer, Kris Rutford.
