Peter Brant buys late artist’s home for $27M

Art-collecting billionaire businessman Peter Brant paid $27 million — $2 million above the $25 million asking price — for an East Village home and studio where the late artist and composer Walter De Maria lived and worked until his death last year, according to city property records.

The 16,402 square foot, five bedroom, four story home is located at 421 E. 6th St. The space, completed in 1921, was a former Con Edison substation — just a block away from Tompkins Square Park.

An empty, 7,920 square foot lot at 418 East 6th St. is included in the deal. Both are zoned for residential or community usage.

Brant, who is also the publisher of Interview and Art in America, is married to supermodel Stephanie Seymour.

The incredible space maintains its industrial origins and would make a great exhibit space.
