Google exec named new American Apparel director

American Apparel named Google exec Laura A. Lee as a new director — the second woman to join the retailer’s board in as many months.

Lee, currently the head of East Coast content partnerships for Google-YouTube, was previously a vice president and head of business development & operations for MTV.

“Laura brings a deep understanding of the Internet space and digital launch initiatives,” said Colleen Brown, who chairs the retailer’s nominating and governance committees.

Brown, formerly chief of Seattle-based TV-and-radio station company Fisher Communications, became the first woman to join American Apparel’s board in July.

With Lee’s appointment, a reconstitution of American Apparel’s seven-member board is now complete.

Under a deal struck last month, controversial founder Dov Charney agreed to leave the board.

Charney, who has been suspended as chief executive pending a board investigation into alleged misconduct, is currently working as a consultant to the company pending a resolution of the probe, which can now begin with Lee’s appointment.

Following a surprise June 18 coup, Charney partnered with hedge fund Standard General to amass a 43-percent stake, forming a bloc that gained effective control.

Standard General, however, controls the bloc’s voting rights as the company considers whether to reinstate Charney as CEO.
