City beaches heat up for Labor Day weekend

This surfer is among the wave of New Yorkers who will be flocking to the beaches this holiday weekend.

As Hurricane Cristobal brought some wild Atlantic waves to Long Beach, LI, on Thursday, forecasters said the unofficial end to this unseasonably cool summer will be filled with lots of sun.

For those who like to sizzle in the sand, Labor Day weekend is the final time the city’s beaches are open.

“I love the heat, and we kind of got cheated this year,” said Steve Benson, 43, who made it to the beach twice this summer.

“The water is finally warm enough to not just jump in and out,” he said.

The National Weather Service is predicting a great weekend, with just a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon.

At 83 degrees, Saturday is the day to fire up the grill.

Sunday and Monday are expected to hit 90 degrees.
