Police rescue newborn trapped inside car

A newborn baby was rescued by police after his mother accidentally locked him in the car at an East Harlem shopping mall, cops said.

The mother placed her 9-day-old baby in the car seat while she was loading groceries into the trunk of her car at the East River Plaza near East 118th Street and Pleasant Avenue around 7:30 p.m. That’s when the car door suddenly closed, cops said.

The keys were in the ignition and she had no way to get back into the car.

The frantic mother called the cops and officers from the 25th Precinct rushed to the scene and broke into the car with a hammer, authorities said.

The baby was unharmed but was taken to Mt. Sinai for observation, authorities said.

Police said it was an accident and the mother was not charged with a crime.
