Man who tried to kill mom on loose from psychiatric center

A violent mental patient got a one-day pass from a Staten Island psychiatric center — and never returned, cops said Thursday.

Vadim Babyrev, 44, was given the leave from South Beach Psychiatric Center in Ocean Breeze, where he has been confined since 1999 after attempting to kill his mother with an iron and striking a second person with the weapon in the eye, police sources said.

Babyrev was last seen leaving the facility on Seaview Avenue near Mason Avenue at about 5 p.m. last Saturday, cops said.

In 2006, he assaulted two guards in an attempt to bust out of the state mental-health facility, sources said.

Babyrev, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 205 pounds, was last seen wearing black jeans, a gray shirt and tan sneakers, cops said.

A call to the state Office of Mental Health was not immediately returned.
