Charles Rangel still owes NY $68K

The state is still trying to collect $68,000 in back rent from Congressman Charles Rangel.

“The outstanding $68K covers the time period from January 2013 until September 2013,” said state Office of General Services spokeswoman Heather Groll.

The bill includes $67,569 for rent and $1,000 worth of renovation charges from 2009 to 2012, an Aug. 7 e-mail between longtime Rangel chief of staff George Henry and House administrative counsel Christopher Brewster shows.

Yet Democrat Rangel, who’s served 22 terms in the House, and Brewster claim payments are up to date.

“We are waiting for the NY state and the House administration to resolve their differences,” Rangel spokeswoman Hannah Kim said. “Our rent is current, and we have money in the reserves.”

Brewster also claimed in his e-mail that the House Office of the Chief Administrative Officer disbursed $76,350 to New York state.

Asked why the state is still demanding money, Kim replied, “Beats me.”
