The future is now — or at least you’d think so, given some of this year’s biggest movies.
This Friday’s “The Giver” continues the trend of Hollywood imagining the future, this time through the story of a boy who is tasked with keeping the memories of his community. The world in “The Giver” is claustrophobic though — a common theme in other big movies.
So we’ve rounded up the important stuff to help you figure out which forecast of the future suits your personality: the one depicted in “The Giver,” “Snowpiercer,” “Divergent” or “The Purge: Anarchy.”
‘The Giver’
Society: Extremely oppressive; values “sameness” over all.
Really bad problem: Morning injections that take away all emotions.
Transportation: Spokeless white bikes.
Housing: Uniform modern units.
Food: Fancy looking chef-style meals served in translucent boxes.
Fashion: Sleek, neocasual; Anjelica Huston haircuts
Entertainment: Sledding on trays
‘Divergent’
Society: Divided into five factions based on an individual’s dominant personality trait.
Really bad problem: The government wants to mind-control everyone.
Transportation: A train that requires jumping on and off.
Housing: Dorm-style communal living.
Food: Hamburgers and cake.
Fashion: Monotone, government-enforced color coordination.
Entertainment: Hand-to-hand combat.
‘Snowpiercer’
Society: The world has frozen; its survivors are stuck on a train.
Really bad problem: Rich people are as oppressive as ever.
Transportation: One train that moves in a continuous loop around the world.
Housing: Train cars.
Food: Protein bars made from bugs; human flesh.
Fashion: Hobo-chic; very furry coats.
Entertainment: One ball.
‘The Purge: Anarchy’
Society: Just like ours, except crime is legal one night a year.
Really bad problem: You could get murdered on purge night.
Transportation: Cars.
Housing: Has high-level security.
Food: Whatever you want for your last supper
Fashion: Creepy masks.
Entertainment: Murder and violence.
