Ex-Jets GM Tannenbaum joins Dolphins as consultant

Mike Tannenbaum just can’t quit the NFL.

Despite embarking on an already successful career as an agent for NBA coaches, the former Jets general manager landed a part-time gig Friday with the Dolphins as a consultant.

Tannenbaum, who was fired after the 2012 season when the Jets missed the playoffs in consecutive years, will focus on “innovation, analytics and sports science,” according to the announcement by the Dolphins.

Both the team and Tannenbaum emphasized the role will not be full time or involve personnel decisions. Tannenbaum will remain in New Jersey and continue to be an agent for Priority Sports.

Tannenbaum has been consulting with the Dolphins since July, according to a league source, but the team didn’t make the move official until Friday.

Tannenbaum, whose expertise with the Jets was working with the salary cap, will consult primarily with new Dolphins vice president Dawn Aponte.

There is a longtime connection between Aponte and Tannenbaum. Aponte’s first job in the NFL came from Tannenbaum when she was hired to work in the Jets’ front office.

Tannenbaum created a splash as an agent this offseason when he landed Steve Kerr a five-year, $25 million deal to coach the Warriors (spurning the Knicks in the process), even though Kerr had never been a coach on any level.
