MTA officer accidentally shoots 3-year-old son

An off-duty MTA police officer accidentally shot his 3-year-old son and injured himself when he was unloading his gun inside his Long Island home, Suffolk police said.

The horrific accident happened inside his Smithtown home around 7 PM Tuesday, cops said.

The officer, Jon Gigantiello, was unloading the automatic firearm when it went off suddenly sending a bullet into his toddler’s arm, sources said.

His hand was also injured during the accidental discharge, police said.

The boy was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and then transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet.

He is now listed in stable condition but remains in the hospital, cops said.

“We are aware of the shooting incident involving the off-duty MTA Police Officer, which is being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Department,” said MTA spokesman Salvatore Arena. “The MTA PD Internal Affairs Bureau will investigate once the Suffolk PD completes its investigation.”
