The 13-year-old boy who survived a jump into the Bronx River that killed his cousin is recovering from the tragic dip, relatives said.
Gavin Wellington spent the night at Montefiore Hospital, his mom by his side.
“He tries to move his fingers and opens his eyes, but he is not talking yet,” said his cousin, Rigo Billo, 24.
Gavin’s grandmother, Maria Pena, was inconsolable at the family’s home, where her 9-year-old grandson Jean tried to lift her spirits.
“I don’t want to see her cry,” the child said.
Gavin and his cousin, Erickson Villa, 13, jumped into the river Friday afternoon, though neither could swim.
Gregory Silvero, 14, tried to save the doomed Villa, but the water was too deep, he said, sadly.
“I called him ‘Shadow’ because everywhere I go he would go with me,” the boy recalled of his lost best friend.
