Darrelle Revis: ‘Weird’ being with Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Even Darrelle Revis finds it strange to be wearing the uniform of the Jets’ most bitter rival.

The All-Pro cornerback said Friday that suiting up for the Patriots still takes some getting used to after six seasons with Gang Green, even though Revis spent last year with Tampa Bay.

“It’s been kind of weird in a way, but I’m a Patriot now,” Revis told reporters after the second day of training camp outside Gillette Stadium. “That’s how things go, and you’ve just got to roll with it. The [fans] have accepted me, and I’m just happy to be here and play ball.”

Those fans might not want to get too comfortable with seeing Revis in New England duds, though. He signed a two-year deal that most likely will end up being for just one season, and Revis repeated Friday what he told The Post in the spring — that he isn’t looking beyond 2014.

“The only thing I can focus on is what I do right now, and right now, I’m a Patriot,” Revis said.

Revis wanted to return to the Jets after the Buccaneers cut him, with The Post’s Brian Costello reporting in March that Revis’ representatives approached the team about a reunion.

But Revis’ people were quickly rebuffed, thanks to lingering hard feelings over the contract battles that prompted his trade to Tampa Bay before last season. The bad blood was so strong, the inquiry from Revis didn’t even reach Jets general manager John Idzik for a decision.

If the Jets’ stiff-arm stung, Revis wouldn’t admit it Friday.

“I’m here now, and all that is in the past,” he said of his standout career for the team that drafted him in 2007.

Revis certainly is welcome in New England, though, with coach Bill Belichick even letting down his guard this week to say it has been fun getting to know Revis.

“Just on a personal level, I never had a personal relationship with him [before now], so I’ve enjoyed that part of it,” Belichick said in response to a question from The Post. “It’s a new year and he’s in a new system, so we’ll see how it all plays out. But I’m glad we have him on our team. I look forward to working with him more.”

Added Tom Brady: “Having the chance to compete against him on another team, I certainly appreciate having him on our team.”

Revis appears to be relishing his chance to play for a Super Bowl contender again after last year’s 4-12 nightmare with the Buccaneers. It was a season doubly frustrating for Revis because he was also coming off knee surgery that never allowed him to feel fully comfortable on the field.

Revis now says he is in “the best shape of my career” after working out for the past month in Phoenix and ready to help the Patriots try to extend their dominance over the AFC East.

If you think Revis also wants to prove he is still the best cornerback in the NFL, think again.

“I don’t need to prove anything to anybody,” Revis said. “[Victories] are what matter. More wins than losses in that column, and that’s what we want to do as a team. That’s for you guys [in the media] to rate this and that. It really doesn’t matter to me.”
