7 things to know about ‘Batman V Superman’

Why so serious, Batman?

As part of Comic-Con in San Diego, producers of “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” have been dropping tidbits of news about the highly anticipated 2016 film.

The latest is this image of Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight, in a close up of his head and cowl, with that manly Affleck cleft chin sticking out.

It looks brooding and kind of cool, but it also looks like Batfleck is being a bit mopey (which is why fans criticized the first image of the new caped crusader when it was released in May).

Be on the lookout for more announcements on Saturday, when Comic-Con holds its big “Batman V Superman” panel.

For now, here’s everything else we know about the movie so far:

The suit

The studio put part of the suit itself on display on the Comic-Con floor, so fans can get a close look at what Affleck will be sporting when he goes up against Superman and whatever baddies the movie brings in. It’s a black cape and cowl, which has stubbier ears than other bat-suits, and appears to be made out of something leather-like, which SlashFilm described as “both elegant and tough” (see the pictures here).

Earlier this month, we got a first look at Henry Cavill’s outfit for his return to the role of Superman and it looks . . . pretty much the same as last time (see the suit here).

The title is kind of dumb

Warner Bros.
The official title is a holy mouthful, Batman: “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Director Zack Snyder’s explanation of the “V” doesn’t make much sense either. So fans have being mercilessly mocking it online.

But it promises many more DC Comic movies

The goal of “Dawn of Justice” is to set up a whole new universe of Justice League-related films through 2018, like what Marvel did with its Avengers movies. The Rock teased this week that he might be playing Shazam, a character with powers similar to Superman’s.

The cast is filling up

Amy Adams will be back as Lois Lane. Joining the cast this time are Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, 30-year-old Jesse Eisenberg as (young?) Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s butler.

Wonder Woman will be a badass

Movie news site JoBlo.com posted this video last month of what it says are “exclusive rumors” about the several parts of the movie, including Wonder Woman. The site says she’ll have a costume consistent with the comic book version, which means battle skirt, golden tiara and a variation on the tradition red top, along with her traditional magic lasso and a shield as one of her weapons.

The video also discusses rumors about Wayne Manor and Lex Luthor’s motivations (hint: he’s jealous that Superman is so strong/loved/cool).

Batman is grizzled

No origin story here: Affleck’s Batman will be a seasoned detective in this film.

Director Snyder said: “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime-fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.”

Release date

The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel are set to battle Captain America at the box office in May 2016.Marvel

Slated to arrive May 6, 2016, fans have nearly two years to get excited and then get sick of all the excitement already. Coincidentally, it’s the same date that Marvel’s third “Captain America” movie is due to come out.

Hey, they’ve fought in crossover comics before, at least.
