Father carries daughter down five floors to escape Harlem fire

This brave dad carried his daughter five floors down a fire escape to flee an early-morning blaze in Harlem Wednesday.

Manuel Diaz, 27, had one arm around 5-year-old Diana and the other on the railing as they fled their apartment on Amsterdam Avenue near West 125th Street at around 6:40 a.m.

“There was a lot of smoke and my daughter was scared. I held her and we went out and down the steps. Then the fireman took her,” Diaz said modestly.

Diaz and wife Julia Castillo awoke to the sound of firefighters breaking a skylight at around 7 a.m. Castillo grabbed 9-month-old baby David and rushed out of the building via the a staircase before Diaz rescued the little girl.

And after the traumatic close call, the tough little tot didn’t miss a beat — scampering into her kindergarten class just a couple of hours after escaping the flames.

The fire broke out on the second floor, possibly due to an electrical problem, residents in the building said.
