Massive brawl on Rikers Island leaves officers with broken ribs

Several corrections officers were left with broken ribs on Rikers Island after inmates enraged about stepped-up searches started a huge melee at the prison, sources said.

The officers were hurt Tuesday night during a brawl initiated by more than 20 inmates reacting to a massive corruption sweep that took place at the prison, according to corrections sources.

The ongoing investigation into contraband at the jail led to many of the inmates cells being searched.

A number of the corrections officers were taken to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries, sources said.

The fight took place between 21 inmates and 10 officers.

On Tuesday, roughly 20 inmates and two guards were busted after authorities conducted a corruption sweep and found a treasure trove of illegal contraband.
