‘Sharknado 2’ dominates ratings with nearly 4M viewers

The popularity of Syfy’s “Sharknado” did not abate on Wednesday night, as the movie’s sequel, “Sharnado 2: The Second One” aired.

In fact, the audience that loved the sheer awfulness of the first film was ready to Tweet about it all night long. Starring Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and Vivica A. Fox, “Sharknado 2” was set in New York City during a really bad weather pattern in which millions of sharks rained down on the streets of the Big Apple. It broke all records for tweets for a television movie — an estimated 1 billion impressions. That’s more tweets than those recorded for Miley Cyrus on the day of MTV’s 2013 Video Music Awards.

In terms of actual ratings, the sharkstorm was also very impressive — 3.9 million total viewers, up from last year’s debut, and 1.6 million viewers in the 18-49 niche.

Besides the cheesy special effects, which included the rolling head of the Statue of Liberty, “Sharknade 2” was notable for its many cameos. Among them: Robert Hays, Kelly Osbourne, Al Roker, Matt Lauer, Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan.

Plans for a third Sharknado have yet to be announced. Last summer, Syfy broadcast the movie twice after its debut, but plans have not been announced.
