Body found in NYC river identified as missing magazine writer

The body of a man that was found in the waters off of Queens has been identified as a Brooklyn magazine writer and bit-actor who went missing in April.

John Cocchi, 74, was reported missing by family members on Friday, April 25, and was last seen leaving his apartment on Gelston Avenue in Bay Ridge, according to police.

A fishing boat captain alerted the Coast Guard when he discovered Cocchi’s body on June 16 in the Ambrose Channel that separates Breezy Point and Sandy Hook, N.J., authorities said.

John Cocchi had a bit-role in the 1966 sci-fi flick Captain Celluloid vs. the Film Pirates, according to imdb.com. Cocchi also worked as a writer for an entertainment magazine in Midtown, sources said.

Cops are still investigating the official cause of Cocchi’s death, although no criminality is suspected at this time, according to police.
