Fitness brands expand to serve traveling New Yorkers

New Yorkers have become a little intense about their workouts and diets. So much so, that they now insist on replicating their fitness and food routines when on the road.

To meet this need, workout meccas like Tracey Anderson and SoulCycle — as well as juicing oases like Suja and Blueprint — are extending their reach across the country. Meanwhile, far-sighted hotels are cooking up wellness related programs to keep folks healthy when far from home.

Juice cleanses

Thanks to an obsession with drinking our vegetables, juice bars are now as deliverable as flowers.

“Suja ships overnight so you can time your delivery to your hotel,” says Annie Lawless, founder of Suja, available at Whole Foods everywhere and also delivered nationwide through its website.

Two other juicing favorites — BluePrint and Juice Press — also deliver nationwide. And BluePrint has partnered with hotels like The Standard and the Mandarin Oriental to create “luxury wellness packages” that combine spa treatments and yoga classes with their juice cleanse.

Classes on the go

Once just an NYC fad, spinning has gone global. Flywheel is now available from Chicago to Dubai, while SoulCycle has spots in LA and San Francisco and soon in DC and Boston. Barry’s Bootcamp informs members by email blast when a beloved instructor pays a visit to one of their many locations (like the Hamptons, Nashville, London). And Tracy Anderson Method lets you pay for a Tracy Anderson trainer to take along on your trip.

There are vacationers who like to lounge by the pool all day, and then there are people from New York. Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, a luxury resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., offers a three-day Triathlon Prep Program. Day one: swim instruction by Olympic champion Misty Hyman, who won the gold for butterfly at the 2000 Sydney games. Day two: a guided desert bike ride. Day three: a tandem run with a fitness instructor, along with spa and massages (program and stay, $1,750).

EVEN Hotels, a new hotel brand offered by IHG (Holiday Inn), is geared to the wellness-minded traveler. Interiors are designed with natural wood and terrariums, room service offers organic meals and smoothies, and there are in-room yoga mats. The hotel has two locations thus far: Rockville, Md. (from $199) and Norwalk Conn. (from $144), with three NYC outposts planned for 2015.

And Thanyapura, located in Phuket, Thailand, takes the fitness resort to its Shangri-La extreme. Stay at the active Sports Hotel, or the tranquil Retreat Hotel — both of which pair pro-level sports training with access to the Olympic-size pool, tracks, rubgy pitch, yoga and martial arts studios.
