Thunderstorm cloud takes weather watchers by storm

A breathtaking image and a video of an enormous swirling cloud over Wyoming have taken weather watchers by storm.

The image, captured by a photographer with the Basehunters storm-chasing group, shows the supercell funnel cloud as it barreled through the plains of Clareton, in eastern Wyoming, on Sunday.

The photo went viral on Monday, after the group posted it on Twitter.

The image shows the spiraling section of a supercell thunderstorm, Weather Channel meteorologist Jon Erdman told USA Today. The video, taken at the same time, shows the cloud forming and swirling above.

Supercells, known as the largest and strongest thunderstorms, are most common on the Great Plains, and rarely produce heavy rains, Erdman said.
