Cowboys to Orton: You owe us $3 million if you retire

Kyle Orton is ready to retire, but the Cowboys really don’t want him to.

Orton has informed the Cowboys of his plans to retire with one year left on a three-year contract, NFL.com reported. The Cowboys, however, are planning to make him return $3 million of his $5 million signing bonus he received in 2012 if he does so. Orton is also scheduled to make another $3.2 million if he plays this season.

Orton stepped in for an injured Romo in Week 17 last season in an NFC East-deciding matchup against the Eagles. He completed 30 0f 46 passes for 358 yards, but an interception on the final drive ended Dallas’ chances of a comeback.

The Cowboys passed on an opportunity to draft Johnny Manziel with the 16th pick of the NFL Draft, and have Orton and Brandon Weeden behind Romo. The backup position could be of particular concern for the Cowboys after Romo underwent his second back surgery this offseason.

Quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson made it clear early this week  the Cowboys are “still hopeful” Orton will report to June’s mandatory minicamp. He may have no other choice, unless he has $3 million of spare cash lying around.
