Social media highlights from Johnny Football’s awkward wait

Johnny Manziel’s wait to be picked in the NFL draft may have been agonizing for the polarizing quarterback, but it was the perfect fodder for social media.

Before Johnny Football could finally smile when the Browns took him at No. 22, the hashtag “BeforeManzielGetsDrafted” was a trending sensation on Twitter. Here were a few of our favorites — you’ll get the drift:

Even the NFL’s official Twitter account was piling on. After the Dallas Cowboys became the 16th team to pass on the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Texas A&M, the league tweeted:

With the Cowboys’ pick coming up, a guy who knows something about slipping in the draft chimed in.

In 2005, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers fell to the 24th pick as the TV cameras chronicled his distress just as they did for Manziel on Thursday.

Then there were the memes that poked fun at the love-him-or-hate-him Manziel going to the downtrodden Browns.

This last one was more controversial, an example in the perils of Photoshop meeting Internet wildfire. Manziel, who has a party-boy reputation, actually was drinking water during his extended stay in the Radio City green room — until someone got too creative.
