Mayor set to name 33-year veteran as fire commissioner

Mayor de Blasio plans to appoint retired FDNY Chief Dan Nigro as the next Fire Commissioner, The Post has learned.

Nigro, who joined the department in FDNY in 1969, retired in 2002 as Chief of Department.

He assumed the role of chief of department after Peter J. Ganci Jr. was killed responding to the Sept. 11 attacks.

During his time with the department, Nigro oversaw the merger of the Emergency Medical Service into the Fire department.

He also served as its chief-in-charge until 1997, and as a city-wide tour commander and chief of Operations before the terror attacks.

Nigro would replace currrent FDNY Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.

A spokesman for de Blasio declined to comment.
