The 13 best and worst moments of the MTV Movie Awards

Sunday night, pre-teens, teens and adults with a secret love of “Teen Mom 2” gathered to watch the most unimportant night in film of the year: The MTV Movie Awards. Were you not one of them? No worries, we’ve got you covered with the best and worst moments of the night.

The Best:

Seth MacFarlane threw shade at himself

While presenting the award for best comedic performance alongside McFarlane, Amanda Seyfried stumbled majorly with the teleprompter, blaming it on not having her contacts in. McFarlane made up for it by calling out his notorious hosting gig: “So far this is going just like the Oscars.”

Lupita Nyong’o instantly created a must-have accessory

Effervescent beauty and style icon Lupita Nyong’o showed up in trendy nerdy glasses. Subsequently, millions of teens with 20/20 vision across the country ran for the nearest flashlight to shine into their eyes in hopes of destroying their eyesight and getting Mom to pay for a sweet new pair of specs.

Mark Wahlberg dropped a bunch of f-bombs

While accepting the Generation award, Wahlberg not only mentioned his “one-hit rap career,” he flung out his favorite word over and over again.

Zac Efron took it all off

After Efron stepped up to accept his award for best shirtless performance in “That Awkward Moment,” it seemed like he really wasn’t going to show the goods. Luckily, presenter Rita Ora wasn’t having any of that — she came up behind him and ripped it off. #Yum.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s bromance

Living legend and all-around screen savior Tatum took home the special Trailblazer award. Hill presented him with the prize, quipping, “What’s a more trailblazing experience than a f—king gorgeous man becoming a movie star?”

Conan O’Brien took shots at Nick Lachey

O’Brien pointed out the fact that Grumpy Cat got a much better seating assignment than the former 98 Degrees singer. It was true, and it was sad. Also, did you know Lachey is the host of something on VH1 now? Me neither, until I just Googled whether it was accurate to make a joke about how this mention was the biggest career moment Lachey has had in years.

Ellie Goulding and Zedd’s gave a dynamic performance

Goulding’s effortless vocals shined in a stripped-down rendition of “Beating Heart” from the “Divergent” soundtrack before Matthew Koma and Miriam Bryant joined for Zedd’s rousing “Find You.”

The Worst:

Embarrassing sound issues

Chris seems to be missing an important piece of equipment as he hits the stage.AP

When Chris Pratt came out on stage to remind viewers to vote for the final award, someone had to run on stage to bring him a mic. But that didn’t compare to the humiliating start of the pre-show, which featured Josh Horowitz and Zendaya introducing the whole shindig — with no sound from their mics at all.

Conan O’Brien made a lame bid at going viral

The show opened with host O’Brien declaring to a table of old dudes that he wanted to break the record for most cameos in an MTV Movie Awards opening montage (so meta). He then proceeded to interact quickly with 50 celebrities, from walking in on Adam Sandler using the toilet to sitting down for manis with Taylor Swift. The problem with the drive-by? They forgot to leave room for actual jokes.

Some band performed

What’s scarier, the music or the creepy white ski masks?WireImage

Adorable human Shailene Woodley and her “The Fault In Our Stars” co-star Ansel Elgort introduced a performance by, as they described it, “underrated” band 21 Pilots. Unfortunately, some things are best off not being rated, such as this band, which sounded like an even worse version of Karmin (we didn’t think it was possible, either). Also, they handed out white ski masks to the mosh pit of teenagers, which inadvertently made them look like the KKK. So, there’s that.

MTV premiered a bunch of exclusive looks at highly anticipated flicks

“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “The Fault In Our Stars” all got a bunch of fanfare for their exclusive first looks, but none of them amounted to much more than a few seconds of footage that told us virtually nothing. Also, since when do we get excited about what is essentially a commercial?

Most of the Best Kiss winners were no-shows

Will Poulter accepts the award for Best Kiss sans his co-stars.Reuters

It’s pretty much sacrilegious to win the MTV Movie Award for best kiss and not re-enact it live. Will Poulter, Emma Roberts and Jennifer Aniston took home the golden popcorn for their work in “Meet the Millers,” but the ladies couldn’t be bothered to show up. This is an even bigger blow when you realize we could have gotten to witness some tongue action between Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller had they won for “The Spectacular Now.”

Rihanna and Eminem performed ‘The Monster’ live for the first time

It wasn’t a bad performance or anything, but why was there not an enormous crowd of back-up dancers in assorted monster costumes? Serious oversight.
