Hundreds mourn fallen officer at viewing services

Timothy Cardinal Dolan joined hundreds of police officers Sunday to mourn the death of fallen Police Officer Dennis Guerra at viewing services Sunday.

The cardinal consoled members of Guerra’s family, including his wife and four children, during the service at the James Romanelli-Stephen funeral home in Ozone Park, Queens.

The 39-year-old officer, who died Wednesday from injuries he sustained April 6 when a “bored” teen allegedly set fire to a mattress in a Coney Island apartment building, was laid to rest in his uniform, wearing white gloves and clutching rosary beads.

“He had a very large heart,” said a family friend, Laura Thomasel. “And I’m glad to see everybody here.”

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton and FDNY Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, as well as the family of Guerra’s injured partner, Rosa Rodriguez, also attended the service.
