Cop tackles woman preparing to jump from GW Bridge

A veteran PAPD cop who is the mother of four young daughters stopped a homeless woman from jumping off the George Washington Bridge Wednesday afternoon, sources said.

Police Officer Theresa Jeffery spotted Cassandra Bess, 44, who was visibly drunk at 2:30 p.m., on the North walkway just as she was preparing to jump, a Port Authority spokeswoman said.

Bess was crying and became agitated when Officer Jeffery, a PAPD cop for 12 years, approached her.

“Leave me alone!” Bess angrily yelled at the officer.

Officer Jeffery tackled her and took her into custody.

Bess was carrying hospital discharge papers with her, along with data on how to contact a “suicide hotline,” the PA spokeswoman said.

Bess was taken to Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

It was the second time in two days that cops stopped a jumper from going over the GWB.

So far this year, there have been a total of 23 “interventions” by PAPD cops, and eight suicides.
