Woman stabbed husband, kept his corpse in a closet, cops say

MAYS LANDING, NJ — A woman accused of killing her husband seven years ago and taking his remains with her when she moved to various homes has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

Loretta Doyle Burroughs, 62, entered her plea Tuesday during a court hearing. She remains jailed on $2 million bail.

Burroughs was arrested in May 2013 at her new home in Lower Township home. She’s also charged with hindering apprehension.

Authorities have said remains found in a closet at the Ventnor home Burroughs was moving out of were identified as belonging to her husband, Daniel Burroughs. She had told family and friends that he left her for another woman shortly before the couple was due to move to Florida in August 2007.

Daniel Burroughs apparently was stabbed to death at the family’s home in Mays Landing, but a cause of death has not been determined.

Loretta Burroughs reportedly lived in at least one other home between moving from Mays Landing and then to Ventnor.

Investigators began re-examining the case after an unidentified family member provided new information to the newly created Cold Case Unit of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office in February 2013. Authorities have not provided specific details on the information, but said it led them to conduct more interviews and helped them gather more details on the case.
