Steve Capus, the former president of NBC News, is joining CBS News where he will oversee “CBS Evening News,” The Post has learned.
CBS, which is beefing up its news division under Jeff Fager, is bringing Capus on board as executive editor. His appointment is effective July 7.
“CBS Evening News,” with Scott Pelley, has been making ratings inroads in the evening news wars. As of April, the newscast was up 7 percent in total viewers, to 7.27 million from 6.81 million a year ago.
“The Evening News is an excellent broadcast, and we believe under Steve’s leadership it will get even better,” Fager said in a statement. “He is a real pro with an extraordinary record, and we are fortunate to have him joining us at CBS News.”
Capus quit NBC in February 2013 after a restructuring in the news division that installed Patricia Fili-Krushel as chairman of the news division.
He oversaw the NBC News division for eight years, overseeing the “NBC Nightly News,” “Dateline,” “Today” and “Meet the Press.”
Capus most recently was working for executive education firm IESE Business.
