Jets’ newest CB Patterson: I’ll prove critics wrong

Nine years into his NFL career, new Jets cornerback Dimitri Patterson still plans to play with a chip on his shoulder.

Speaking to local media for the first time since signing a one-year, $3 million deal, Patterson sensed he still doesn’t command respect because he came into the league as an undrafted free agent.

“Obviously, I don’t have the sexiest or flashiest name, or I don’t have a lot of hype behind my name,” Patterson said. “The thing about it is, when you turn on the tape with the opportunity that has been given to me, I have had 20 starts throughout my career, and my numbers speak for themselves.”

Patterson, 30, was signed away from the rival Dolphins after a star-crossed 2013 season in which he recorded a career-high tying four interceptions in just six games before being shelved by a groin injury.

Patterson had surgery in late December on his groin but said he is already fully recovered. He also said the Jets will give him the chance to start at cornerback opposite Dee Milliner after Gang Green let Antonio Cromartie depart for the Cardinals for essentially the same contract Jackson signed.

The Jets’ other signee this week, ex-Raiders receiver-kick returner Jacoby Ford, also spoke and addressed the lingering concerns about his health after he had Lisfranc surgery two years ago.

Ford ran a 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine four years ago and said the surgery didn’t rob him of any speed.

“I run the exact same [speed] or faster [than when he came out of school,” Ford said. “I feel that confident in my running.”

Ford said he chose the Jets over the Browns after the team said he could compete for both the kickoff and punt return duties.

“I’m definitely looking forward to that,” Ford said.
