British Guiana stamp expected to sell for record $10-20M

A rare postage stamp printed in British Guiana in 1856 and most recently owned by a du Pont heir convicted of murder is expected to fetch a record price of $10 million to $20 million at a New York auction June 17, Sotheby’s said Monday.

The only known surviving 158-year-old British Guiana One-Cent Magenta stamp is being sold by the estate of John du Pont, who died at 72 in a Pennsylvania prison in 2010 while serving a sentence for the 1996 shooting of US Olympic champion wrestler David Schultz.
