Teen arrested after ‘terror threat’ tweet

A 14-year-old Dutch teen who achieved social media stardom with a foolish Twitter threat against American Airlines was arrested Monday.

Then she really paid the price — Twitter suspended her account.

After a day of pleading online for mercy, the 14 year old who goes by the name Sarah was taken into custody by Rotterdam police, who announced the arrest — how else? — on Twitter.

“Dutch girl (14) from Rotterdam arrested after American Airlines threat. Investigation continues. #Rotterdam #Police #Force @americanair.”

Sarah thought she was just having some harmless fun Sunday when she used her @QueenDemetriax account to menace an industry and an airline that are more than a little sensitive about terrorist threats.

“@AmericanAir. hello my name’s Ibrahim and I’m from Afghanistan. I’m part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I’m gonna do something really big bye.”
Ha. Ha. Ha.

But young Sarah stopped laughing when American Airlines replied with an equally ominous threat.

“@QueenDemetriax_Sarah, we take these threats very seriously. Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI.”
Sarah then went into full Twitter freakout mode.

“@AmericanAir omfg I was kidding.”

“@AmericanAir I’m so sorry I’m scared now.”

“I’m not gonna tell my parents, they’ll tell me to delete my acc omg that would be the end of my life.”

But by the end of the string of apologies, Sarah saw a silver lining by realizing the Twitter blunder had attracted thousands of new fans.

“Wow bc of this I gained 1k followers,” Sarah tweeted, eventually ending the day with nearly 30,000 new followers.”

Then Twitter shut her down.

It was not clear if Twitter pulled the plug before or after her arrest.

A company spokesman declined to comment.

A spokesman for the Dutch port city of Rotterdam said the teenager turned herself in at a police station Monday afternoon after authorities launched an investigation into her whereabouts.

“The assumption made by her tweets was taken seriously, and I may add that it is a rather alarming threat,” Rotterdam police department spokesman Wessel Stolle told CNN.

A spokeswoman from American Airlines declined to comment.
