Facebook reaches across the aisle

Call Facebook and Snapchat nonpartisan when it comes to the political bent on social media by millennials.

Google+ and Twitter seem to skew more toward Democratic, while Pinterest trends more Republican, according to a recent poll of 18- to 29-year-olds by the Harvard Public Opinion Project.

According to the poll, social media usage by millennials has grown since the previous poll, conducted last fall.

“Over the last couple of semesters, we’ve seen Twitter go more mainstream; [among high-school students] it’s tied with Facebook as the one social network that young people can’t live without. That’s a significant sign relative to just a couple of semesters ago,” John Della Volpe, Harvard Institute of Politics Polling director, noted.

The number of respondents having a Facebook account grew from 79 percent to 84 percent since last fall. Pinterest had the largest jump, to 33 percent, from 25 percent in 2013.

Google+ is at 44 percent account usage, with Twitter at 40 percent. Instagram grew to 36 percent; Snapchat rose to 23 percent, and Tumblr had 14 percent.
