10 must-see indie movies at the Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival starts tomorrow, showcasing a ton of intriguing upcoming movies, from revealing documentaries to good ol’ knee-slappers. Here are our picks for movies to see at the festival — or when they hit theaters:

‘Intramural’

What it’s about: A fifth-year senior decides to get his team back together for one last shot at the intramural football championship in this comedy with the tagline “the epic sports movie for the guys who don’t deserve one.”

Why you should care: Assists from Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharoah and Beck Bennett put the “Saturday Night Live” stars in a whole new element.

‘Just Before I Go’

Seann William Scott in “Just Before I Go.”Mark Schwartzbard

What it’s about: In Courteney Cox’s feature directorial debut, Seann William Scott (“American Pie”) stars as a guy who’s made up his mind to commit suicide, but first will head back home to face the people who have brought him to this point. Believe it or not, it’s a comedy.

Why you should care: You know you’ve missed Stifler.

‘Life Partners’

What it’s about: Sasha (Leighton Meester from “Gossip Girl”), a lesbian, and Paige (Gillian Jacobs of “Community”), strictly hetero, are best friends. When Paige gets serious with a guy (Adam Brody), Sasha doesn’t take it so well.

Why you should care: Blair Waldorf as a scorned lesbian? Check, check, check.

‘Begin Again’

What it’s about: Keira Knightley stars as a down-on-her-luck singer in New York who has just broken up with her boyfriend (Adam Levine). But luckily, she meets a record-label guy (Mark Ruffalo) who is going to help turns things around.

Why you should care: There’s lots of great music. It’s from the writer-director of “Once,” John Carney, and has songs from that film’s star Glen Hansard. Plus, Adam Levine and Keira Knightley really sing!

‘Love Is Strange’

Alfred Molina (left) and John Lithgow in “Love Is Strange.”Jeong Park

What it’s about: Alfred Molina and John Lithgow star as a gay couple who can finally get married in New York. Only trouble is that doing so will cost one of them his job, causing major drama in the relationship.

Why you should care: Buzz is strong for Molina and Lithgow’s performances.

‘Miss Meadows’

Katie Holmes in “Miss Meadows.”Briana Baker

What it’s about: Katie Holmes takes on the titular role, a very prim and proper woman who also happens to live a double life as a vigilante. When she strikes up a romance with the town sheriff, suddenly things get a bit complicated.

Why you should care: One can only hope that this movie is a celebration of Holmes’ freedom from Tom Cruise.

‘Famous Nathan’

What it’s about: This documentary looks at the creation of Coney Island’s iconic Nathan’s Famous Frankfurters through the lens of the original Nathan’s grandson.

Why you should care: Hot dogs are delicious.

‘Preservation’

Pablo Schreiber (from left), Wrenn Schmidt and Aaron Staton in “Preservation.”Katrina Marcinowski

What it’s about: A hunting trip goes terribly wrong for two brothers when they bypass a “Closed” sign on a nature reserve. All of their gear is stolen, and then the thrills and twists just keep coming.

Why you should care: One of those brothers is Pornstache (Pablo Schreiber) from “Orange Is the New Black.”

‘The Newburgh Sting’

What it’s about: This crime documentary focuses on the “Newburgh Four” Bronx terrorism plot in 2009, and it promises to challenge what you think you know about what went on.

Why you should care: It’s like a thriller, except this stuff is real.

‘Zombeavers’

What it’s about: A B-movie in the vein of “Sharknado” about some very hungry zombie beavers who take on a group of sexy teens in a cabin by the lake.
