Candy Corn Oreos hitting store shelves

Maybe you twist the edges apart and lick the frosting. Maybe you dunk the entire cookie in milk, soaking the wafers and cream.

Maybe you prefer Double Stuff. Or the original. Or a holiday version.

Everyone has an Oreo routine, a technique for enjoying the iconic frosting-filled cookies.

That routine’s been twisted apart with the news that Kraft Foods Inc. is releasing Candy Corn Oreos ahead of the Halloween season.

The “limited edition” cookies, featuring vanilla wafers and yellow and orange-colored cream, will be available exclusively at Target stores.

We’ve seen specialty and alternate Oreos in the past, from all-chocolate and all-vanilla versions to Halloween, cool mint, winter and Birthday Cake Oreos, each featuring different color combinations to represent specific occasions.

But this – merging one treat with another – is different. It’s like ‘birthday cake’ ice cream in that sense. Or York Peppermint Pattie-flavored Klondike bars. The new Oreos commemorate wedge-shaped Halloween candies in cookie form.

News of the Candy Corn Oreos was met with surprise, shock, disappointment and curiosity online. Children’s horror book writer R.L. Stine pondered the deeper meaning behind Kraft’s announcement.

“Candy Corn Oreos arrive in stores on Monday? Is life complete now?” he wrote on Twitter.

The “Goosebumps” author’s questions are difficult to answer. Oreos used to be so simple – chocolate wafers connected by white cream. Tall glass of milk. Tradition. But for a limited time, your twisting, licking and dunking will become more colorful than ever.
