1 woman remains missing after Harlem blast

One woman remains unaccounted for from Wednesday’s deadly gas blast that killed eight and injured more than 50, sources said.

Japanese citizen Mayumi Nakamuka, 34, was the only person still missing Friday morning as firefighters continued to clear debris from the pile of bricks and twisted metal.

The death toll as of Friday morning remained at eight dead, seven of whom had been identified.

Sources said the body of the eighth person was so badly burnt that the person could not immediately be identified.

It was not immediately clear if Nakamuka might be that person.

Meanwhile, former President Bill Clinton arrived in East Harlem Friday to thank first responders who have been working at the scene for the last 48 hours.

Investigators were still at a loss as to what caused Wednesday’s explosion, telling reporters that they plan to interview residents who claimed to have smelled gas prior to the blast.

“Nothing is off the table. We’re here on a fact finding mission,” said Robert Sumwalt, an NTSB spokesman. “We would like for witnesses — whether somebody reporting a gas leak or anything like that — we would like for them to email us at witness@ntsb.gov.

In addition to speaking to members of the public, Sumwalt said his agency will be digging through 911, 311 and Con Edison call logs relevant to the area around the blast site.
