Hollywood Reporter, Cosmopolitan get award noms

Who is the hottest editor of them all? Most savvy media types say the battle is shaping up between Joanna Coles, the British-born editor of Cosmopolitan, and Janice Min, the New Yorker transplanted to LA who has revived The Hollywood Reporter.

Both received nominations Thursday for a National Magazine Award by the American Society of Magazine Editors.

Sure, there were the usual bushel full of nominations for Adam Moss at New York, who received nine — the same number as Time Inc. as a company and two more than Hearst.

Condé Nast titles topped all other rival publishing houses with 30 nominations.

But it is the Min/Coles face-off that savvy observers are watching most intently.

“It was our first nomination in 25 years,” said Coles, when reached shortly after the nominations were revealed, “and it’s great that it was for an article about contraception” in the personal service category.

Min is claiming the first-ever nomination for THR.

It is in the general excellence category for special interest magazines.

“Three years ago, The Hollywood Reporter was nearly six feet under,” said Min, who scrapped the daily version and revamped the weekly into an oversize glossy.
