Don’t wait for the movie, check out these NYC Lego sculptures

“The Lego Movie” hits theaters Friday, and we’re hoping that it just might wipe the bad, explosion-y taste of those awful “Transformers” movies out of our mouths. The feature, based on the beloved 65-year-old Danish toy blocks, is offering up some silly, tongue-in-cheek fun while boasting a stellar cast, including Chris Pratt (of “Parks and Recreation,”) as the star Emmet, Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”) as Batman and Will Ferrell as the villain.

But you don’t have to make the movie your only Lego fix. You can find lots of cool Lego art around NYC. Here are four hot spots.

The Lego Store (620 Fifth Ave.)

The whole store isn’t constructed out of Legos (which would probably hurt your feet), but it is a huge shrine to the building blocks, with sculptures and landscapes lining the walls, ceilings and windows. This Santa was spotted in December, and other creations have included the New York Stock Exchange, Rockefeller Plaza, George Washington Bridge and the store’s signature giant green dragon.

The “Art of the Brick” exhibit

When Nathan Sawaya and his parents wouldn’t get him a dog, he built one for himself, out of Legos.

“That was that first ‘Aha!’ moment,” Sawaya told the Post in June, “When I realized OK, you don’t have to build what’s on the front of the box. You can build whatever you want.”

Sawaya turned that curiosity into a series of elaborate, life-size and otherwise artistically driven Lego sculptures, currently on display in Times Square. The “Art of the Brick” exhibit features such varied creations as Lego versions of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” a re-creation of One World Trade Center — plus original works such as this Statue of Liberty baring her heart.

New York Comic Con

Anyone who is looking forward to seeing the Lego movie and its epic mashup of overlapping geeky Venn diagrams will feel right at home in the great melting pot of nerd culture that is Comic Con — returning to NYC in October. The annual fest brings together celebrities and artists from all walks of comics, entertainment and toy making, and Lego is a big presence. The toy maker showed off its Lego superheroes games in 2012, and other years have drawn fans with sculptures of “Lord of the Rings” characters, Darth Maul and more.

You’ll usually find big Lego displays in the huge toy store with the Ferris wheel any time of year, such as this Manhattan display of the Empire State Building (complete with King Kong!), Statue of Liberty and Chrysler Building.
