Designer Alexander Olch unveiling ‘fashion’s open kitchen’

There’s something lurking in the basement, and it’s fabulous. Alexander Olch is unveiling the subterranean space of his new Orchard Street shop to the public, in fashion’s answer to an open kitchen.

When construction ends in a few weeks, shoppers will be able to walk downstairs to the production department and witness the goods being made on the spot. “It’s exciting to design products, see them handmade and then sold, all under one roof,” says Olch, who started his line in 2002. If the sewing isn’t entertaining enough, “we have some good rye whiskey on hand,” Olch said.
