Ramp collapses, cutting off ferry service to Greenpoint

Commuters traveling by ferry in and out of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, will have to find a new way to get around today — and maybe for another week.
The East River Ferry has suspended all boats connecting through that terminal, at the far western end of India Street.

The ramp leading up to boats coming into India Street has collapsed into the water. Witnesses have posted pictures of the fallen ramp on social media. The service could be down at Greenpoint for a week, sources said.

“The City’s East River Ferry operator, BillyBey, alerted us of this incident immediately after it occurred this morning,” a ferry source said.

“Engineers will be thoroughly investigating the situation to determine what caused the collapse. We will continue to work closely with the operator and owner of the pier to ensure that this matter is attended to, and that ferry service is safe for all passengers. Passenger safety is our first priority, and the India St.- Greenpoint stop on the East River Ferry will remain closed until all necessary repairs are made.”

Commuters can normally get to and from Greenpoint through stops at East 34th Street, Pier 11/Wall Street, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Schaefer Landing in South Williamsburg, North Sixth Street in North Williamsburg and Hunters Point South in Long Island City.
