‘Love & Air Sex’ makes for a clunky rom-com

Love is the weak link in this clumsily titled rom-com, which plays a bit like a hipster infomercial for Austin, Texas. Aspiring LA screenwriter Stan (Michael Stahl-David) books an impulsive trip when he hears his ex, Cathy (Ashley Bell), is going to be there; each crashes with the same-gender half of another separated couple, their friends Kara (Sara Paxton) and Jeff (Zach Cregger).

Their respective weekend plans coincide with the city hosting the Air Sex World Championship; if you don’t know what that is, well, it’s like air guitar but not. Cregger’s Jeff, determined to win, takes the stage name “F - - kasaurus Sex,” which gives you an idea of the tenor of the proceedings.

An amusing concept that begs for a proper documentary (apparently there’s one in the works), the competition provides the backdrop to an otherwise unremarkable 48 hours of romantic shenanigans centered around the foursome, of whom Paxton’s purple-haired spitfire is the only real standout.
