Track fire, icy rain and snow delay morning commuters

Icy rain and snow, as well as a track fire at Grand Central and Brooklyn, snarled Wednesday’s commute for riders, authorities said.

There was no 7 train service for over an hour starting about 9:15 a.m. between Queensboro Plaza and 42nd Street after a fire in a tunnel at the station, according to an FDNY spokespersona dn the MTA.

The MTA asked riders to take the N and Q into Manhattan from Queens, but signal problems at Queensboro Plaza also snagged those lines.

Service came back about 10:45 a.m. on the 7 line, but there were still delays.

Signal problems also shut down the 1 line between 42nd Street and the 137th Street-City College stop, as well as the 3 line between 42nd Street and 148th Street.

The 2 is running on the 5 line between 149th Street-Grand Concourse and Nevins Street after signal issues in the Bronx, and the 5 train also has delays.

New Jersey Transit suspended service on the Northeast Corridor and New Jersey Coast lines at 8:45 a.m., due to ice buildup on overhead wires.

Transit officials were concerned the wires could snap, stranding trains.

Service on those lines resumed about 11 a.m.

Other New Jersey Transit trains on other lines have 20-30 minute delays in both directions, except the Atlantic City line.

City buses have been outfitted with tire chains, but there are delays on routes throughout the city.
