Lundqvist perfect again; Team Canada rolls

Friday’s action in Sochi

‘Twas a Tale of Two Henriks for Sweden, which defeated Switzerland 1-0 behind goaltender Henrik Lundqvist while captain Henrik Zetterberg was ruled out of the remainder of the Olympics because of a herniated disk after having played in the opening victory against the Czech Republic.

Daniel Alfredsson scored at 12:39 of the third period against the Swiss while The King recorded 26 shutouts for his third Olympic shutout while improving to 9-2 lifetime with a 1.82 GAA. Zetterberg, who has missed 13 Red Wings games with back-related issues, will be sidelined indefinitely once NHL play resumes.

Canada and Finland each rolled in setting up a Sunday showdown for first place in Group B, an automatic bye into the quarterfinals and perhaps first overall seed in the playoff rounds. Finland, which defeated Norway 6-1, has a plus-nine goal differential while Canada is at plus-eight following a 6-0 rout of Austria. Goal-differential is the first tie-break.

Roberto Luongo, the incumbent who won gold in 2010, recorded 23 saves for Canada, which had gone with Carey Price in Game 1 against Norway. Jeff Carter, who opened as the 13th forward, registered a hat trick. P.K. Subban replaced Dan Hamhuis on defense while Matt Duchene bumped Patrick Sharp up front.

Teemu Selanne became the oldest player ever to score a goal in the Olympics, the 43-year-old winger (43 years, seven months, 11 days) recording the 21st of his career (21-18=39 in 33 games) for the Finns, who went with Kari Lehtonen in goal following Tuukka Rask’s 8-4 victory over Austria in the opener. Mats Zuccarello had four shots in 20:51 for the Norwegians.

Jaromir Jagr and Marek Zidlicky each scored for the second consecutive game in the Czech Republic’s 4-2 victory over Latvia. Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, who did not dress for Czech’s opening defeat to Sweden, recorded the victory.

Due up Saturday

The USA-Russia matchup (7:30 a.m., NBCSN) is in the spotlight, with the winner gaining a hold on first place in Group A. The Yanks, who will stay with goaltender Jonathan Quick, enter with a plus-six goal differential while the Russians, who are expected to go with Semyon Varlamov for the second straight match, are plus-three.

Sweden, 2-0 and plus-three, would clinch first place in Group C with a victory over (or shootout loss to) Latvia.
