ABC News’ Sherwood could get boost after ‘GMA’ rise

The buzz around Tinseltown isn’t all Oscar movie talk.

Rumors are swirling that ABC News boss Ben Sherwood could be in for some additional responsibilities as a reward for pulling off the once unthinkable — ABC’s “Good Morning America” toppling the “Today” show to jump into the No. 1 slot for mornings.

While Sherwood recently signed a new deal to remain news chief, insiders are whispering he could get additional responsibilities.

Alexander Payne’s movie, “Nebraska,” is filmed in black-and-white, and features several depressing-looking bars in even drearier rural towns.

The story of a son trying to connect with an aged father and cranky mother led one studio higher-up to quip: “If I were the state of Nebraska, I’d sue.”

Whatever number of awards “Gravity” pulls down at the Oscars on Sunday night, it has already taken home one of the best: Best Performance at the Box Office.

The movie, starring Sandra Bullock as an astronaut who rescues herself from outer space has racked up $269.4 million in US ticket sales since its October release.

The picture — likely to win Alfonso Cuarón the Best Director award—cost $100 million to make.

Last year, “Lincoln”was tops at the box office at $176.8 million. This year only four films of the nine nominated for Best Picture crossed the $100 million mark domestically, according to boxofficemojo.com—“American Hustle” at $144 million, “Captain Phillips” at $106 million and “The Wolf of Wall Street” at $113 million are the other three — compared to six films last year.
