Couple hires pet detective to find missing puppy

A crackerjack pet detective is hot on the trail of a missing East Village puppy named Georgie with the help of her scent-tracking dogs.

Investigator Jordina Thorp Ghiggeri — who boasts a stunning 70 percent pet-finding success rate — was hired by the puppy’s owners after he broke loose from a dog-sitter and ran away in the Lower East Side on Christmas Day.

The heartbroken owners, Margaret Mak, 33, and her boyfriend Manu Pohani, 34, frantically launched a hunt for the six-month-old poodle mix, posting fliers and asking neighbors for clues.

Missing pooch, Georgie.

“We fell in love with [Georgie’s] quirky personality. It’s been really hard. He’s part of the family and we don’t give up on family,” said Mak, who is still searching for little black pooch.

But after weeks with no solid leads, the couple called Lost Pet Professionals, a national firm that uses trained dogs to track down missing pets, and paid Ghiggeri a $600 fee.

Ghiggeri’s canine sleuths first sniffed Georgie’s jacket to get familiar with his smell, which can linger for up to two months on streets and sidewalks, Ghiggeri said.

The four-legged gumshoes then tracked the puppy’s scent from the Lower East Side to a sidewalk near the Chambers Street A/C subway station in Tribeca, where the dogs stopped dead in their tracks — a sign that the pup’s scent had vanished.

“There’s no guesswork; it’s very cut and dry: He was picked up,” Ghiggeri said.

“We’re not assuming any wrongdoing. Any good Samaritan could have done it,” Ghiggeri said.

The determined “detective” then posted dozens of fliers in the area and questioned local merchants and passersby, said Ghiggeri, who is based in New Jersey.

She now plans to return to Manhattan on Saturday to pursue more leads.

Ghiggeri has handled eight missing pet cases in the past two years in New York City, tracking down a shy black Chihuahua and a pit bull named Tigger in the Lower East Side.

“We’re praying we find Georgie,” Ghiggeri said.

Georgie is black with white fur on his paws and belly.

Anyone with info about the lost dog should call Pohani at (917) 233-2545. The couple is offering a $2,500 reward.
