Man who reported girlfriend’s shooting was the gunman: cops

A Queens man who reported to police that his girlfriend was shot during a home invasion was collared on Monday for her attempted murder, prosecutors said.

Steven Diaz allegedly shot 22-year-old Amanda Rivera once in the head with a 9mm handgun and drove her to Jamaica Hospital for treatment after throwing the weapon down the sewer.

Diaz, 30 of Kew Gardens, is currently awaiting arraignment for attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence charges.

Rivera is currently in critical condition. If she does not survive, the charges will be upgraded, DA Richard A. Brown said.

Diaz attempted to cover his tracks by telling cops three masked robbers entered their 127th Street apartment early Sunday morning and one of the them shot her, police said.

Investigators didn’t buy his story and charged him Monday afternoon.

Ten pounds of marijuana was also allegedly found in Diaz’s apartment.

If convicted, Diaz faces up to 25 years in prison.
