Giants void deals on unproductive Webster, Myers

In a move of little surprise, the Giants on Friday parted ways with two players who had perhaps the most disappointing 2013 seasons of all — tight end Brandon Myers and cornerback Corey Webster — when their contracts were automatically voided.

Myers signed a four-year deal with the Giants last season with three voidable years and Webster had one voidable year remaining on his contract.

The Giants signed Myers, who was coming off a productive 2012 season with the Raiders, to replace Martellus Bennett after they opted not to meet Bennett’s contract demands. Bennett, though, was a key target for Giants quarterback Eli Manning in 2012.

Myers, who caught 79 passes for 806 yards and four touchdowns in 2012 for a bad Raiders team, never became that reliable target for Manning, who loves to throw to his tight ends.

Myers finished with 47 receptions for 522 yards and four TDs. His forgettable season will be best remembered for a pass he failed to catch against the Bears in Chicago, where Bennett ended up signing. Myers was unable to grab a Manning throw that ended up being intercepted, sealing the Giants’ sixth loss in a 0-6 start that doomed their season.

Webster, who was injury-plagued, played in only four games. Nevertheless, he lost his job to Trumaine McBride long before being placed on season-ending injured reserve in December. He already was coming off a poor 2012 season during which he struggled in coverage.

In an early mock draft conducted by ESPN analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay, they differed on the player they believe the Giants will draft with their No. 12 overall pick. McShay has the Giants picking Michigan tackle Taylor Lewan and Kiper predicted they will take Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley.
