As the San Francisco 49ers move closer to the Super Bowl, coach Jim Harbaugh has decided to make a wardrobe change.
Harbaugh, whose trademark sideline look includes a black sweatshirt tucked into pleated khakis, quipped to reporters Wednesday that he splurged for a new pair of pants.
“These Dickies cost $23,” he said. “They were on sale that day.”
That’s not the only upgrade. Harbaugh had been admonished by his wife, Sarah, in a recent radio for the outdated style of his slacks.
“I’ve asked him ‘Please, pleats are gone. Wear the flat front.’ … He has a flattering body,” she told KMVQ-FM in San Francisco. “I threw them out and when he went to the combine, he found a Walmart. They were $8. $8!”
“Problem solved there,” Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday. “The Levi’s or the Nike and the Dickie makes a flat khaki. So ‘happy wife, happy life.'”
With the 49ers having won road games at Green Bay and Carolina in the first two playoff rounds, Harbaugh is playing with fire — his team won games with him in the cheap, pleated khakis, so why mess with a good thing?
His wife is conflicted, saying that she “will not take blame for his outfits,” but that she does not want to throw cold water on the red-hot 49ers.
