Cancer patient dead after firework ‘suicide’

A Queens man was killed when a firework exploded inside his mouth and blew part of his head off in an apparent suicide Monday night, cops said.

Alfred Mayo, 70, killed himself in his apartment above Austin’s Ale House in Kew Gardens at around 6:30 p.m., according to police.

Neighbors said that Mayo lived in the area for more than 30 years and suffered from cancer.

“He had a big tumor on the side of his face,” one neighbor said.

“He had surgery done. It was removed a few months ago. He was very intelligent and well-read.”

The crime happened at the same intersection of one of the most notorious crimes in the borough’s history.

Kitty Genovese was stabbed to death on Austin Street in 1964 while crying for help. Witnesses ignored her pleas.
