After he’s sworn in, Barack Obama will cruise around the nation’s capital in the world’s most heavily armored, techsavvy vehicle: GM’s new Cadillac presidential limousine.

The limo has 5-inch thick armor plating and bulletproof windows.

It is also hermetically sealed to prevent any kind of chemical attack.

“Cadillac is honored to again provide a new Presidential Limousine,” said Mark McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. “This is a great American tradition that we’re delighted to renew with an all-new car featuring the best of Cadillac’s dramatic design and technology.”

The vehicle will have larger windows to enhance visibility, sources said. But the overall footprint will be about the same as the limo used by outgoing President Bush.

The Secret Service and GM were mum about the secret specifications – such as the limo’s gas mileage. Obama has urged automakers to make greener, less polluting cars.

More generally, GM said much of the cabin’s leather interior is sewn by hand. Hightech LED spotlights illuminate the US and presidential flags on the front fenders.
