PIAZZA STREAK TRULY RBI-POPPING

MIAMI – Mike Piazza was hoping to leave Miami after tomorrow’s game as owner of a remarkable baseball record.

If Piazza records an RBI in each game of the three-game Marlin series that began here last night, he’d have at least one ribby in 18 straight contests.

That would break the major-league record of 17, set by the Cubs’ Ray Grimes – in 1922.

“With Mike you never think there is something he can’t accomplish,” GM Steve Phillips said.

“To be able to string that many consecutive games of production together is pretty amazing.”

Here’s something else pretty amazing: During the 15-game RBI streak that Piazza took into last night’s game, he had 28 RBIs.

He also entered last night with a 20-game hitting streak. And during that stretch, Piazza was 30-for-82 with 10 homers, 33 RBIs and 21 runs scored. His average in that span – .366 – was identical to his season’s mark.

Talk about consistent. Talk about consistently amazing.

As for the RBI streak, Todd Zeile was taking nothing away from Piazza – but said the feat also is a team stat because Piazza had to have guys on base to drive home.

“It’s a pretty amazing streak,” Zeile said.

“It’s certainly something that is remarkable when you look at guys on the list.”
